Couples Therapy Services

I work with couples at all stages, from new couples to those who have been together for many years.

I also work with couples who are in the difficult position of trying to decide whether to stay together or end their relationship.

I welcome couples of all relationship styles, cultural backgrounds and sexual orientations, including partners in nontraditional relationships.

If neurodiversity is impacting your relationship, we will address it directly and honestly, without blame. I will provide resources and tools that can support both of you, and that you can use right away.

I use an evidence-based approach to therapy, which means we will be using techniques that have been proven to be effective. To that end, one of the tools that I use is the Gottman Relationship Checkup, an online questionnaire that gives me an in-depth understanding of your relationship. This allows me to learn about your relationship’s strengths and challenges even  before we meet.  Couples often tell me that completing the assessment also helps them to organize their thoughts around their priorities and goals.

Ultimately, couples therapy with me is a safe and structured environment where you can try out new skills and learn about yourself and each other.

It’s brave to admit that you don’t have all of the skills needed for your relationship. It’s never too late to learn new tools for improving your connection.  Like any skill, you may need to practice for a while in order for it to feel like you can do it well. I welcome the opportunity to accompany you on this journey.

In terms of logistics, there are a few different ways to work with me.

Weekly Couples Therapy

In weekly couples therapy, we meet over Zoom. These sessions last for 50 minutes, and happen from the comfort of your own home. I occasionally offer longer sessions to couples as needed.

I am only able to work with couples who live in California. Ideally, it works best for both partners to be in the same location, but if for some reason that doesn’t work, we can also do a 3-way Zoom call.

There’s no set amount of time that therapy takes, but generally with weekly therapy, I ask for a commitment of at least six months, so you have time to really learn and practice the new skills we will be working on.

Please contact me   if you want to learn more about how weekly couples therapy can help you and your partner.

Intensive Couples Therapy Retreats

If you’re looking for more of a condensed therapy experience, I offer in-person, intensive couples therapy weekend retreats (also known as “marathon couples therapy”) in Oakland, CA.

This is an especially great option if you have a hard time fitting  weekly therapy into your schedule, or you simply want to work with me in a concentrated way in a short period of time.

Each retreat is private and customized to reflect your relationship’s unique needs – many clients describe these retreats as the equivalent of at least six months of weekly therapy, completed in one weekend. Follow up sessions are available as needed.

Discernment Counseling

Discernment Counseling is a unique style of therapy, specifically designed for couples who are in the difficult position of deciding whether or not to stay together.

Discernment Counseling is a short-term, clarity-seeking process, with a goal of simply deciding what action to take next – whether to work on the relationship or to separate/divorce.
